The performance of Smart cars can be modified and improved. We use either chip tuning or remapping to change data values stored on an EPROM computer chip located in the Engine Control Unit, or ECU. The modifications give your Fiat better MPG and a more powerful drive.

Remapping is a process that requires accessing the data stored on the chip in the ECU and changing it to better the vehicle's performance via the OBD/OBDII port. Remapping can be done on Smarts dating from 2000 and after. Chip tuning is a similar performance-enhancing process that is used on Smart models manufactured before 2000.

With chip tuning, we must remove the ECU from your Smart and then change the data stored on the chip in the ECU to improve the vehicle's efficiency. Depending on the type of engine in your Smart, you can receive performance gains of 15 percent to 30 percent over its initial performance values. The performance gains obtained from either chip tuning or remapping are the same - the only difference between the procedures involves how the memory chips are accessed and the way the alterations are accomplished.
